How Decision Making Affects Our Quality of Life

13: How Decision Making Affects Our Quality of Life with Dr. Austin Perlmutter

Let’s talk about bad habits. We all have them!

Austin Perlmutter is here to talk all about how our decision-making and habits ultimately affect our quality of life.

Austin Perlmutter, MD is a board-certified internal medicine physician and New York Times bestselling author. He received his medical degree from the University of Miami and completed his Internal Medicine residency at Oregon Health and Science University in Portland Oregon. His focus is in helping others to improve decision- making and quality of life. He is also interested in methods of understanding and reducing burnout in the medical field.

Dr. Perlmutter is the co-author of Brain Wash: Detox Your Mind for Clearer Thinking, Deeper Relationships, and Lasting Happiness. He also writes for Psychology Today on his blog, The Modern Brain, and is a contributing writer to several health and wellness websites.

We are talking about how motivation affects us when choosing a healthy or unhealthy habit, why a little bit of stress is sometimes good for the brain and more.

In Today’s Episode We Discuss:

  • The problem with pursuing instant gratification over long term satisfaction
  • Understanding how the inputs we give our brains and bodies impacts our outputs
  • How motivation affects us when choosing a healthy or unhealthy habit
  • Why a little bit of stress is sometimes good for the brain
  • The negative effects of chronic stress
  • Tips for avoiding chronic stress
  • The value of meditation, nature, exercise and sleep
  • How habit formation relates to behavior change

Our brains are changing every moment, and it’s up to us to decide if we want to harness the ability to improve our lives or if we want to allow it to be affected by whatever inputs are part of our day-to-day.

Remember, our goal is always to do the best we can with what we have available, so if you have habits in your life that are not leading to a better quality of life, create strategies to reduce them!
